I’ve read some people’s problems of migrating their data from RAID0 to a single hard drive, and find their logic completely wrong. What they say is that the performance is much slower, and that it is because all the data is now running off of a single drive. That is completely false. It’s not because the data was transfered to a single drive, but how the data stripes were arranged from RAID0 to the single drive due to the hard drive image. I know from first hand experience having tried to do this task myself. I noticed considerable slowdown on loading Windows XP. However, anyone who owns another computer running the operating system off a single hard drive will notice the difference in load times from migration, but will not be able to tell the difference of load time between a RAID0 system and a single hard drive system from just mere human observation. Re-installing Windows brought the performance back to exactly the same speed as when I had the RAID0 setup, but now I have an extra hard drive to use freely. If you understand how RAID0 works with its striping, it’s easy to understand as to why there’s decreased performance. I wondered why there was a difference in speed in loading Windows XP between my desktop and laptop, and this was the only reasonable explanation. If you reinstalled the RAID0 disk image to another RAID0 setup, I’m sure the performance speed will be the same. So before you complain about the performance speed of a single hard drive system after trying to migrate a RAID0 setup to a single hard drive setup, take into account the way a RAID0 setup distributes the data to the drives included in the RAID.

So if you ever need to migrate to a single drive from a RAID0, just reinstall the OS and save yourself the frustration of a slow system.
